There are many aspects to running a successful business; inventory or service products/equipment, a physical location, a website, marketing and advertising, and the list goes on and on. But in addition to the obvious factors associated with operating a business, you also have to consider unexpected and rare occurrences.

Injuries at work are one such example. The repercussions of an accident or incident occurring while on the job can vary greatly, depending on how serious it is.

And for the most severe of situations, your workplace injury procedure could be the difference between life and death.

While things won’t always be so critical, any company involved in an industry that works with heavy equipment or machinery, volatile or hazardous substances, or in dangerous areas has seen its fair share of accidents

Make Sure Medical Attention Is Sought Immediately

Whenever you have a workplace incident, time is of the essence. This is especially true if it is a more serious issue and a swift response could end up saving limbs or digits. In cases such as this, it is suggested that you contact 9-1-1 and arrange for immediate transfer of your employee to a nearby emergency room.

Less critical injuries can be dealt with by taking the employee to a medical facility such as the company’s doctor or an urgent care center.

Get the Injury Reported as Soon as Possible

Once you have handled the medical situation for your employee, the next step in your workplace injury procedure should be to report it to your insurance provider. It’s important to get the process started ASAP, as the claims process for your workman’s compensation may be complex, depending on who your provider is.

Keep the Lines of Communication Open

There are a lot of people that are involved in handling workplace injuries. Along with the employee who was hurt and the employer, you also have the medical care team, the insurance providers, co-workers, and of course, the family.

The more information that is shared, the better it is for all aspects of the process. Knowing what is going on also helps the employee’s morale by including them which, in turn, can aid in their recovery.

Re-Evaluate Your Company Safety Program and Workplace Injury Procedure

After these other things have been taken care of, now is a great time to look over your entire safety process to see not only what could have been done to prevent the accident, but also what could have been done better following it. There is always room for improvement in any safety program, especially one that hasn’t had to be used in a while.

Always Remain Focused On Injury Prevention and Safety

Finally, the best way to avoid accidents is to make hyper-attention to the safety part of your company’s culture. If injury prevention is truly a core foundation of your work environment, it will have a huge impact on lowering the risk of employees or others getting hurt.
