I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.
Billy Joel
None of you would deny the healing power of music. Every one of us has resorted to music at different stages of life just to calm ourselves and compose our nerves. Regardless of genre music has held a soothing power from the inception of the world till date. Human beings are able to connect and relate to music regardless of the culture or language in which it originated. It’s a common realm to which most individuals are able to connect.
Musicians are the harbinger of this musical realm that inspires so many people. One such individual who has been able to create this musical arena is Jonathan Parez, who is popularly known as Serio. He is a Mexican American Rap artist hailing from Los Angeles, California. In 2005, he stepped into the musical arena as a rap artist. His love for music led him to the creation of Serio Controla Records in order to release his songs and the works of his fellow artists.
Serio released his first song ‘They Call Me Serio’ when he was on a tour. He released his first album, ‘Nightmares Turned into Reality,’ in 2006. ‘I Got to Have You,’ is one of the songs in his first album that attained rotation in multiple radio stations in the whole country. The song became a huge success. Over 150,000 units of his first album were sold, which was a huge milestone for a new artist in the industry. In 2009, he released his second album N.T.I.R. Part 2 The Revenge of Serio. The third and fourth albums, Gangsterism Part 3, and Soy Chicano Rap in 2011, and 2013 respectively.
Serio has worked with numerous renowned artists in his album including Lighter Shade of Brown, Conejo, Kid Frost, and MC Magic. The latest song that he has released under his label Serio Controla Records is ‘They’re Just Jealous’ in 2023. He is not a static artist, who just produces music in one genre rather he is a dynamic artist who has produced rap in multiple genres including Gangsta rap, Chicano rap, Underground hip hop, West Coast rap, Hardcore rap, Latin rap, Hip hop, and Political hip hop.
Apart from inspiring people through his music, he has also used music as a channel for spreading awareness about social issues. In 2012, he released Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Mexican’ featuring Conejo and Proper Dos, which challenged the ‘SB 1070’ law passed in Arizona. The song depicted the biased and discriminatory attitude faced by Mexicans at the hands of American lawmakers and politicians. He advocates that the Mexican community should be treated equally and fairly in the United States.
The creative spark in Serio knows no bounds, he has explored his potential as an actor as well. In 2009, he debuted in his first film, Blazed. He released The Rise of Serio in the same year which was succeeded by Gangsterism Part 3 in 2011. Both of the movies depicted and represented his musical career from scratch. With his impeccable skills, he has been able to create music that is not only loved by the Mexican community but by a large audience globally. His message resonates with the people and they find harmony in it.
