1. There is Infidelity

If one or both partners have been unfaithful, it’s possible that your marriage is fundamentally broken. Some couples are able to move past infidelity. However, it generally takes years to reestablish trust.

If there were other underlying issues, infidelity is one of the strongest signs that divorce is coming.

2. There is Abuse

If you’re asking yourself “Should I get a divorce?” after you’ve been abused, the answer is absolute. Abuse from either spouse is unacceptable behavior. It doesn’t matter if it’s emotional, mental, or physical abuse, you need to liberate yourself from the relationship.

3. You Have Irreconcilable Differences

One of the most common signs you are ready for divorce is if there are major differences between you and your partner. Irreconcilable differences include things like:

  • Religion
  • Political affiliations
  • The desire to have or not to have children
  • Career choices
  • Future plans
  • And more

These are important issues that a married couple must be able to agree upon. In most successful relationships, there is an even balance of give-and-take, as well as compromise. However, some issues are simply too important for some people.

4. Marriage Counseling Has Failed

In some cases, couples do everything they can to avoid getting a divorce. Often, they seek help and mediation through couples counseling. If after several months of counseling you and your partner still can’t get along, it’s one of the strongest signs you need a divorce.

However, if you’re not sure you’re ready to get divorced, find out if you can get a legal separation. It may be your best choice for right now, but not all states allow it.

5. One or Both Partners Have Given Up

Another one of the most common signs you are ready for divorce is if one or both spouses have thrown in the towel. There comes a point in rocky relationships when people simply get tired of fighting. Instead, they roll over, ignore the other person, or stop communicating entirely.

This is a difficult obstacle to surpass and may point to the end of your marriage. If you, your spouse, or both of you have given up trying, it’s likely time to separate.
