In our modern world, things move fast. Both literally and metaphorically. The quicker you can get something done, the sooner you can move onto the next thing. We want faster cars, internet, food, and more.

But while we like everything fast, one thing that still takes a lot of time is highway construction. While it might seem like highway construction takes so long for no good reason, that’s not really the case.

It can take several years to work on just a small road. And if you drive by, it might even seem to you like the workers aren’t even really doing anything.

So if you’d like to learn what’s really going on, then keep on reading and we will take you through everything that you’re going to want to know!

Slow and Steady

Road construction isn’t the cushiest job out there. There are a lot of risks and dangers involved. Road crews like to work methodically, carefully, and slowly.

While this will make the project go on for longer, it is also a lot safer and less disruptive than rushing to work as quickly as possible. It also means that they will more likely get the job done right.

Financial Problems

Costs add up when it comes to highway construction. When a government needs a road built, the construction company will submit a bid but won’t get paid until the entire amount is up-front.

This means that if payments are not made on time, or the funding dries up, then the work stops until the money is flowing again. Construction workers aren’t going to work for free, after all.

It Isn’t Just Pavement

When you are working on a road, you also need to do work below the surface. This means attending to drainage inlets, guard rails, stripes, reflectors, and curbs.

Also, the pavement needs to be leveled precisely and even between lanes. You can’t be sloppy with this kind of work.

Watch the Weather

If it is too wet or cold outside, then the work is going to be put on hold. Even if the forecast is bad, a crew might delay working so they don’t get drenched in the middle of a task. If storms make it all messy then the crew is going to need to spend time cleaning everything up.

Labor Laws and Regulations

There are a lot of laws and regulations that surround construction work. Certain workers can only do certain tasks.

Crews can only work for certain amounts of time.

There are also many different people working on different issues. For example, you have drilling contractors, safety officials, and teamsters all working together.

It is usually more cost-efficient to have more days that are shorter than fewer days that are long.

The Importance of Knowing Why Highway Construction Takes So Long

As we can see, there are many reasons why highway construction takes so long. By knowing what’s involved, you can better appreciate all of the work that goes into building a road.
