Best Guided and Self-Guided Walking Holidays to Austria

Austria boasts some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in Europe and there is no better way to experience them than on foot. Austria is one of the most visited European countries and is visited by thousands of tourists every year to see it for themselves.

Whether you’re trekking around the serene waters of Hallstatt Lake or making the climb up the renowned Grossglockner road, there are many exciting guided and self-guided walking holiday destinations in Austria.

The Alderweg

Also known as the Eagle’s Way, this is an example of a walking holidays in Austria that challenges every holidaygoer. Spanning 413 kilometres across the Austrian Alps, this trail is not for the faint-hearted.

The Alderweg map resembles an eagle, hence its name. This 33-day trek is divided into two different routes and offers gorgeous views of the Tyrol. This is a hut-to-hut hiking trail so you’ll find traditional accommodation for the night before moving further up the trail.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road

This guided tour takes you along one of Europe’s most scenic alpine routes, offering breathtaking vistas of Austria’s highest peak – the Grossglockner. The trail is 48 kilometres long and winds into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

You’ll enjoy the view of countless three-thousand-metre-high peaks and mountain waterfalls. Not to mention, the museums, exhibitions, and awe-inspiring vistas you’ll find on your way.

The Lechweg

This 125-kilometre trail follows the majestic Lech River, leading you deep into the Austrian Alps. Starting at an elevation of 1,793 metres, this self-guided walking holiday offers plenty of opportunities for healthy exercise, relaxation, and the best food from the regions of Vorarlberg, Tyrol and the Bavarian Allgau.

You can look forward to highlights such as the Formarinsee, the Doser waterfall in the lower Lechtal and the two castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. The destination of Lechweg is the Lechfall near Fussen.

The Austrian Lakes and Mountains

The Salzkammergut region is home to some of Austria’s most stunning lakes, whether you’re there to explore or bathe. Go on an 8-day adventure to walk around glittering lakes, green meadows and impressive mountain peaks.

This walking holiday is ideal for those looking for a combination of physical activity and cultural delights. You can opt for guided tours around Lake Wolfgangsee and Hallstatt that are suitable for easy-to-moderate hikers.
