There is no denying that the global pandemic that is Coronavirus has affected all of us, whatever our circumstances.
Almost overnight, we were plunged into a world of the unknown. We did not know what to expect, what was really happening or when it would all end. And we were thrust into our own microcosms, separated from friends, family and loved ones when we all needed one another most.
No wonder the last couple of years has seen an overall decline in the world’s mental health.
As life is slowly attempting to get back to normal, we find ourselves trying to readjust and shake off the effects of the pandemic.
We need to establish another new normal. A new normal is better for our mental, physical and emotional health than ever before.
Because, let’s face it, we need it.
So, what is the answer?
Exercise.
How does exercise improve mental health?
Numerous studies over the years have confirmed that exercise reduces anxiety, depression and negative moods. It also increases cognitive function, self-esteem, and encourages socialization. Exercises for the childrens health are also important. It should be fun for the children.
Exercise increases the blood circulation to the brain which influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). The HPA then communicates through to parts of the brain such as the limbic system, the amygdala, and the hippocampus. These various parts of the brain control mood and motivation and responses to stress.
So how does exercise provide stress-relief and improve mental health?
Or in other words, exercise makes your brain happy, which in turn makes you happy.
What is the best type of exercise to do to get fit and feel better?
Anything goes.
Seriously.
Put simply, any exercise or activity is better than no activity at all.
If you aren’t sure where to begin, check out a personal trainer that specialises in fitness for beginners. They will give you a full assessment and talk about your goals and aims, and any barriers that prevent you achieving them.
Decide on what motivates you? What makes you happy? Do you prefer exercising alone? If so, swimming might be your preference.
Bored of swimming length after length and want to try something different? Maybe scuba diving lessons can get you out, about and meeting new people?
Want something a little more social? How about a fitness class a couple of times a week?
There is something for everyone, that everyone can do, whatever your current fitness level is… or isn’t.
What are the benefits of exercise?
Taking up regular exercise isn’t just about losing weight. It is important for your overall health and welfare.
Feeling better about ourselves starts in the mind. If we don’t have the motivation or inclination to do anything, we risk falling deeper into apathy.
Ten benefits of exercise include:
- Stress relief
- Better sleep
- Increased libido
- Improvement in mood
- Increase in energy and stamina
- Improvement in concentration
- Reduces cholesterol levels
- Decreases risks of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes
- Reduces blood pressure
- Increases self-esteem and confidence
How much exercise do I need?
The good news is, you don’t need to throw yourself into a punishing exercise routine to start seeing and feeling the benefits.
It is recommended that everyone does 150 minutes of exercise a week. Break that down and it is only 30 minutes of exercise per day, five days a week.
Better still, you don’t need to do all 30 minutes in one burst. Three 10-minute activities that get your heart pumping and your body moving is enough to make a big difference.
Because I shall repeat: any exercise or activity is better than no activity at all.
