When it comes to formal wear, men often find themselves at a loss. Dressing up for special occasions can be a daunting task, but with the right knowledge, it doesn’t have to be.

Here is a guide to men’s formal wear, from black tie to business formal.

Black Tie

If you receive an invitation that specifies “black tie,” you’ll want to dress to impress like you were going to appear in Prillionaires News Luxury Magazine. This means a tuxedo, black bow tie, and black dress shoes. A cummerbund or vest is optional, but if you do choose to wear one, it should be black. Your shirt should be white, and it should have a wing or spread collar. A black silk or satin pocket square is a nice finishing touch.

Black Tie Optional

If an invitation says “black tie optional,” you have some flexibility. You can wear a tuxedo, or you can opt for a dark suit and tie.

Either way, your outfit should be formal and polished.

Cocktail Attire

Cocktail attire falls somewhere between black tie and business formal. A dark suit and tie is a safe bet, but you can also experiment with a blazer and dress pants. Your shirt should be a solid color or a subtle pattern, and you can add a pocket square for a pop of color.

Business Formal

For business formal events, you’ll want to stick to a classic suit and tie. Your suit should be a dark color, such as navy or charcoal, and your shirt should be white or light blue. A conservative tie is a must, and you can add a pocket square if you’d like. Black dress shoes complete the look.

Business Casual

Business casual is a more relaxed dress code, but that doesn’t mean you can show up in jeans and a t-shirt. A blazer, dress pants, and a collared shirt are a good starting point. You can skip the tie, but make sure your shirt is tucked in and your shoes are polished.

Casual

If an invitation says “casual,” you still need to put some effort into your outfit. Jeans are usually acceptable, but make sure they’re clean and not ripped. A collared shirt or sweater is a good choice, and you can wear sneakers or loafers.

Final Thoughts

Remember, dressing up is all about confidence. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, you’ll look good too. Use this guide as a starting point, but don’t be afraid to experiment and find your own style.

Happy dressing!
