Thinking About a Trading Evaluation? Six Things Worth Knowing First

A friend mentions it over coffee. Someone in a group chat posts a screenshot of a payout. Within a week you are reading about “funded accounts” and wondering whether you could trade a £100,000 balance without risking your own savings. The short answer is that you can try, but the attempt costs money, and the odds are not as friendly as social media suggests.

Proprietary trading firms, often called prop firms, offer a route into the markets that did not really exist for ordinary people a decade ago. You pay a fee, trade a monitored account under a set of rules, and if you meet the target without breaking those rules, you are allowed to trade a larger account and keep a share of the profits. Before you sign up for anything, these six points are worth understanding.

1. The fee is a cost, not a deposit

The money you pay to take an evaluation is not held for you and is rarely returned if you fail. Some firms refund it after your first successful payout, others do not. Treat it the way you would treat the price of a course or an exam: spend only what you could comfortably lose, and decide in advance how many attempts you are willing to pay for.

It also helps to decide what you will do if the first attempt fails. Some people take a break, review their trades and come back months later with a tighter plan. Others buy a new evaluation the same evening, usually out of frustration. The second route is how a £100 experiment turns into a £600 habit.

2. Most people do not pass

Firms do not always publish pass rates, and the figures that circulate online vary widely. What is consistent is that a minority of candidates reach the funded stage, and a smaller group stay funded for long. That is not a reason to avoid trying, but it is a reason to ignore anyone promising that a particular strategy or signal service will get you through.

3. The rules matter more than the profit target

Newcomers fixate on the target, typically somewhere between 8% and 10% of the starting balance. The figures that actually end most attempts are the daily loss limit and the maximum drawdown. Break either one and the account is closed, even if you were in profit the day before. Read how each limit is calculated. Some firms measure losses from your starting balance, others from your highest point, and the difference can decide whether a normal losing streak ends your evaluation.

Think about time limits as well. Some evaluations give you thirty days, others have no deadline at all. A tight deadline pushes people to take bigger risks towards the end, which is exactly the behaviour the loss limits are designed to punish. If you have a full-time job and can only trade an hour a day, a no-deadline format will usually suit you better.

4. Check who you are dealing with

Because evaluations usually take place on simulated accounts, many prop firms are not regulated in the same way as UK brokers. That makes your own research important. Look for clear terms, a track record of paying traders, real contact details and a company you can identify. The Financial Conduct Authority’s ScamSmart pages explain the warning signs of investment fraud, and the same instincts apply here. Pressure to buy quickly, guaranteed returns and vague ownership are all reasons to walk away.

A good habit is to read a firm’s rulebook and FAQ in full before you pay. On onefunded.com, for instance, the evaluation steps and trading conditions are laid out on the site, so you can judge them against your own approach rather than relying on a promotional video.

5. Payouts are taxable income

If you do get funded and receive a share of profits, that money is generally treated as income rather than as a gain on your own investments. How it is taxed depends on your circumstances, and payments from an overseas firm still need to be declared. Keep records of every fee and every payout, and check the guidance from HMRC or speak to an accountant before the end of the tax year rather than after it.

6. Your habits will be tested more than your strategy

Plenty of people have a strategy that works on paper. Far fewer can follow it when they are two losses down, bored on a quiet afternoon or excited after a big win. Evaluations are designed to expose exactly those moments. If you have never kept a trading journal, start one now on a demo account and see whether you can stick to fixed risk per trade for a month. If you cannot, the evaluation will reveal it more expensively.

A simple test is to run your plan for twenty trading days on a free demo account using the exact limits of the evaluation you are considering. If you finish without breaking a rule, you have a reasonable basis for paying the fee. If you break one in the first week, you have saved yourself the cost of finding out the hard way.

None of this is meant to put you off. If you are disciplined but short on savings, a prop firm can be a sensible way to access more capital with a fixed, known cost. It simply works best when you go in with realistic expectations, a budget you can afford to lose, and a clear idea of the rules you are agreeing to follow.
