Due to a shortage, companies that produce chipsets are increasing prices by 10-30%. The best time to buy parts for building a PC from scratch is right now—before the prices change.

Buying parts and assembling a computer on your own is not only part of a great hobby, but it can also save you money. Pre-built PCs have a higher markup that includes manual labor. If you purchase each component separately and piece them together on your own, you sidestep the extra expenses.

What if you’re new to the craft, and just getting started? Well, the best way to jump in is to keep the most important details in mind. This includes identifying the different parts you’ll need along with recommended hard drive, amount of RAM, and cooling system.

If you’re keen on building your own computer, you’ll want to check out the following things to do before getting started.

  1. Preventing Damage

While gathering the different parts for your computer, you’ll want to purchase a few items to prevent damage during assembly. A few examples include:

  • Tech toolkit
  • Anti-static wristband
  • Personal computer screw kit

The tech toolkit comes with screwdrivers and different types of utensils that greatly assist in the assembly process, helping prevent mishaps and potential damage. An anti-static wristband reduces the likelihood that you’ll unintentionally burn a chipset with static electricity. If you want to avoid all the technical challenges, consider purchasing the BPC Gaming Laptop instead.

  1. Purpose of PC

Prior to even browsing components for your build, figure out what purpose your PC will have. Office work, gaming, and internet browsing all require and use different computing resources. This step will decide how to choose a CPU and which graphics card you’ll need.

  1. Cooling System

There are two systems to consider for keeping your rig at reasonable temperatures. These are air and liquid cooling. Lean towards liquid if you’re going to spend long hours using a gaming PC. Otherwise, the air alternative should work fine.

  1. Recommended RAM

RAM, or random access memory, is slowly climbing the priority list for custom PC builders. While this is expected for evolving video games, popular web browsers are demanding more resources over time.

Aim for a minimum of 8GB.

  1. Type of Hard Drive

You can choose a standard hard drive or a solid-state drive. Both work fine for storage. However, the latter is vastly faster than the prior.

Your best bet is the solid-state, even if it’s more expensive.

  1. Power Supply

Without the proper amount of watts from a power supply, you can destroy your system before using it. Make sure to verify how much you’ll need, and always opt for a good brand.

Start Building a PC From Scratch

Building a PC from scratch doesn’t have to be complicated. If you pick the right power supply wattage and hard drive, you’re already halfway done. Depending on the purpose of your computer, you’ll want to gauge the necessary amount of RAM and type of cooling for optimal performance.

Damage prevention is a priority, but there are plenty of other things to consider. Look around the site for more information that might help you on your quest for building your own PC!
