Do you have dark spots or uneven pigmentation?

Maybe scars caused by acne are making you want to hide your complexion.

You can always try applying layers of makeup.

It can help disguise dark spots and scars, but it can also cause additional skin problems.

Layering on your makeup can result in breakouts due to clogged pores.

Thankfully, there are ways you can treat skin pigmentation issues and acne scars.

What Causes Skin Pigmentation

Dark spots and uneven skin tones affect millions of women and men.

Hyperpigmentation is commonly caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. It can also include tanning beds.

UV rays trigger the production of melanin to protect your skin from sun damage. However, the extra melanin in your skin can also result in dark spots.

Inflammation and specific medical conditions like Addison’s disease are other common causes of hyperpigmentation.

Women who are or have been pregnant may develop a condition known as Melasma. Occasionally referred to as a mask of pregnancy, fluctuating hormone levels can cause dark spots to appear.

Treating Dark Spots

Skin pigmentation treatment can take multiple forms.

Keeping your complexion clean and hydrated can help treat some mild forms of hyperpigmentation.

Over-the-counter and prescription medications are another treatment option.

But what about stubborn dark spots?

Skin pigmentation treatment options also include high-tech options.

A licensed dermatologist may recommend chemical peels, dermabrasion, or microdermabrasion to help even out skin tone.

Dealing with Acne Scars

While almost everyone is or has dealt with pimples and blackouts, some cases can be severe.

Acne scars can make you embarrassed to show your complexion without wearing multiple layers of makeup.

Even then, the scars are still visible.

However, you can find treatment options for both raised and depressed acne scars.

Treating Scars from Acne

Acne scar treatment options are typically performed by a board-certified dermatologist.

The right treatment for you depends on a few factors that include identifying the type of acne scar.

When the scars are depressed, treatment options can include minor, outpatient surgery to lift the scar by breaking up the tissue. The procedure can make the scar less noticeable and encourage it to gradually fade over time.

Skin tightening and resurfacing are other treatment options to minimize the appearance of acne scars.

You may also be good candidates for fillers. The fillers plump the skin around the skin to bring it to the surface.

Collagen injections and skin tightening procedures are other treatment options for depressed acne scars.

What About Raised Acne Scars

Treating raised scars can include injections that soften and flatten the skin tissue.

Acne scar treatment can also include outpatient surgery that combines either corticosteroid injections or radiation.

Laser therapy can also reduce the appearance of raised acne scars, along with a procedure known as cryosurgery.

Cryosurgery involves freezing the scar tissue. After freezing the tissue slowly dies and disappears. But you will want to ask your dermatologist about any potential side effects.
