Santorini is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) southeast of Greece’s mainland.
The municipality of Santorini encompasses the island and some small areas of its closest neighbour, Thera (the largest volcanic caldera on Earth). The volcano is still active and after a series of earthquakes in July 2017 there were fears that it might erupt.

The name “Santorini” means “Saint Irene”, named after the Greek Orthodox saint, Saint Irene, who according to legend saved the islanders from a great fire in the 10th century BC. The 25th Island of Greece Name came into use during Byzantine times when food supplies decreased and people had fewer resources.
The Red Beach has its unique color due to the high amount of iron in the water which comes from molten rock below the ground.
The whitewashed buildings of Santorini, following the natural contours of the island, are a striking contrast to the bare, red-brown peaks. The villages perched on top have become area attractions that complement the beaches in terms of nightlife and shopping. The cliff-top towns attract numerous tourists and provide an eclectic mix of restaurants and bars that cater to all tastes.
Santorini is home to some unique churches. Architecturally they are built with red rock excavated from deep underground, and feature white stucco and green-and-blue ceramic mosaics.
The main town, Fira (pop. ~4,500), is located on the southern tip of the island and is a popular tourist destination. It offers an impressive volcanic backdrop to the many narrow laneways that hide small boutiques, jewellery stores and art galleries.
