Should you wear gloves when dyeing your hair?

Should you wear gloves when dyeing your hair?

Here’s the thing: hair dye isn’t made from natural materials or ingredients, so the chemicals present in it can not only irritate but also burn the skin. Therefore, it’s imperative that you wear the appropriate protection while dyeing your hair, such as hairdressing gloves or preferably, nitrile gloves.

Some people tend to wear latex gloves for protection – however, if you’re allergic to latex, you may have to deal with some unpleasant side effects afterwards. Nitrile gloves, on the other hand, are suitable for all skin types, particularly sensitive skin.

What happens when you don’t use hairdressing gloves or nitrile gloves while dyeing your hair?

The ingredients in nearly all hair dyes contain a chemical called PPD or P-phenylenediamine, which is a by-product of petroleum, giving the dye its coal-tar colour. Even though the FDA has approved the use of coal-tar colours, there are a number of proven health risks when you dye your hair without using gloves.

The most major one being, of course, getting your hands burned, especially if you have sensitive skin. When you don’t wear protection such as hairdressing gloves or nitrile gloves while dyeing your hair, the hair dye can leave stains on your hands, which can take days to fully remove.

It’s even possible that your skin will itch from the chemicals permeating the skin’s top-most barrier.

Some people have reported sores, redness, itching, and a burning sensation due to not wearing gloves while dyeing their hair. The reactions are simply the dye’s chemicals seeping right through your skin’s pores, wreaking undue havoc.

If exposure to the chemicals in hair dyes are not enough to alarm you and convince you to use a pair of high-quality nitrile gloves, then perhaps hair dye stains might.

Hair dye stains on some skin types can take from a few days to a few weeks to remove. More concerning is the fact that these stains can often form in the beds of your nails, which means they will be in contact with your skin for a lot longer than just a few weeks.

These stains will remain until your skin cells re-grow or you find another harsh chemical to remove the chemical-laden stains from the hair dye!

Why put yourself through unnecessary trouble? Simply by wearing nitrile gloves or even hairdressing gloves, no matter what colour or material they are, you’re giving yourself adequate protection – almost. Nitrile gloves are the most versatile option as they offer a lot more durability compared to regular gloves or hairdressing gloves. Not only that, they offer a very comfortable layer of protection as you dye your hair, especially since regular gloves can be a bit annoying to get on and take off.

Play it safe!

When it comes to your skin health and even your overall health, it’s best not to take any unnecessary risks, which may prove to be a thorn in your side later on – not to mention the trips to the dermatologist.

Invest in a good pair of disposable nitrile gloves today and call it a day!
