  • A research paper in 2012 suggested that deficiency of vitamin D might be a risk factor for inflammatory disease onset like RA and might also increase the severity of the condition.
  • Another research paper suggests that vitamin D supplements can be beneficial for preventing osteoporosis. Also, RA sufferers experience greater joint pain and have a high risk of osteoporotic fractures. So, it is advised that they take supplements.

Too much vitamin D

It is very rare for someone to get too much vitamin D. However, overdose has the potential to be very serious. Taking too many supplements is the most likely cause of vitamin D toxicity. If your daily intake of vitamin D for several months is 60,000 IU, it might lead to vitamin D toxicity as this is 100 times the normal recommended dietary allowance for an adult, 600 IU. 

People with certain health problems might need even less vitamin D than the average person. Such people are also susceptible to excess levels of vitamin D. The vitamin D that you get from food and sunlight can be easily regulated by your body. It is almost impossible to get vitamin D toxicity from the sun. 

However, spending a lot of time in the sun can interfere with the body creating vitamin D. Having vitamin D toxicity can result in calcium buildup in your blood. This condition is called hypercalcemia and has the following symptoms:

 

  • Frequent urination
  • Kidney problems
  • Nausea 
  • Poor appetite
  • Vomiting 
  • Weakness

 

The primary treatment for this condition is discontinuing or reducing the use of supplements. However, in some cases, medications or intravenous fluids might be required.
