The UK has created some exciting artists over the years and boasts a diverse, up-and-coming music scene for all to enjoy.
Online bingo site Jackpotjoy recently conducted a study to find out which music genre and artist was most popular in each county.
Music Genres: Which is the most popular?
Music is incredibly subjective, with many people across the country having different tastes and musical requirements. As music is divided into a number of different genres, some genres will be more popular than others amongst the general public.
Jackpotjoy’s study found that Pop music was the most streamed music genre throughout the UK, with 10 counties’ most listened to artist being in the Pop genre.
Rock was the second most streamed genre, with Folk Pop and Indie Rock following closely behind.
How have streaming services changed the way we listen to music?
Streaming services have impacted the music industry massively. With affordable platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, it’s never been easier to listen to our favourite music.
These services allow users to create and customise their own playlists, gaining access to millions of songs across the globe with just a few taps.
Streaming has impacted the way songs are now written and produced. As these services pay artists a smaller fee compared to that of CDs and tour tickets, musicians now have less reason to create longer tracks.
Additionally, data collection from streaming platforms allows artists to gain insight into their fans’ listening habits, learning more about what music has and hasn’t performed well. This feedback can allow artists to chop and change their music where necessary and if required.
As streaming allows musicians to reach a wider, diverse audience – artists now have more reason to release songs that everyone can enjoy. This could mean that your favourite artist might release a ballad and a dance track all on the same album.
Which music comes out on top for each county?
The study shows which artist is most popular in each county throughout the UK. Here are just a few examples of the findings:
- Ellie Goulding came out on top in Hertfordshire, with 24,933,929 monthly listeners in June 2022
- Dua Lipa was most popular in Central London, with 73,430,339 monthly listeners in June 2022
- Arctic Monkeys got the top spot in South Yorkshire, with 26,502,124 monthly listeners in June 2022
- Ed Sheeran was a fan favourite in West Yorkshire, with a whopping 83,510,485 monthly listeners in June 2022
Some artists have managed to go viral with the help of social media. Oxfordshire’s most streamed artist was the band Glass Animals, with their 2020 hit song Heat Waves proving popular amongst social users.
